The Louisville Police Department is a large police department that covers one of the biggest cities in the state of Kentucky. The department is responsible for responding to crimes, providing crime prevention, conducting investigations that can lead to the arrest of criminals, and supporting the community with resources, such as domestic violence help and drug detox programs. The jail houses female and male inmates, who are county, state, or federally incarcerated. The county jail has a capacity of 1,793 inmates. The annual bookings in 2021 was 16,713, the average monthly bookings in 2021 was 1,393, and the average daily bookings was 46. The most common charges an inmate received were failure to appear in court, violation of probation, possession of drugs, and assault. The jail offers inmates rehabilitation programs, to help integrate them back into society.
Inmates are allowed to visit with their friends and family while incarcerated. Visitation hours vary for male and female inmates, and the level of confinement they are in.
