The Leitchfield Police Department is entrusted with the duties to serve and protect the community, while enforcing all city, state, and federal laws. Officers participate in community programs such as security and crime watch groups. The department has 19 sworn officers, one secretary, one Detective and one drug task force Detective. Two of the nineteen officers are School Resource Officers. All officers of the department are required to be certified and this is accomplished by completing twenty weeks of training through the Department of Criminal Justice Training located in Richmond, Kentucky. In addition to the twenty weeks, every officer is required to complete forty hours of in-service training annually. Several different areas of study are available for these classes. The current Chief of Police is David Riley.

Leitchfield police officers transport individuals who have been arrested to the Grayson County Detention Center, also located in Leitchfield. The jail is co-ed, and has 3 separate buildings, including the main facility, the female facility, and the annex facility. All three buildings are located in Leitchfield, close to each other. Advanced programs dealing with substance abuse and criminal addictive behavior, partnerships with local churches, and tried-and-true educational programs such as GED and WorkKeys, provide inmates a better chance to succeed when they walk out of our doors.

Grayson County Detention Center encourages inmates to keep in contact with family and friends through regular visits. Visits will last 15 minutes. County/State Visitation is on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Federal Visitation is on Fridays and Sundays. Visitation times are from 8:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Central Time. Visitation resumes at 12:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Central Time. A valid photo ID card is needed to enter the visitation area.

The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office has deputies that patrol the county and answer calls for assistance. Deputies serve civil and criminal papers to members of the community, including warrants for arrest. An important duty the office has is collecting county taxes. The deputies go through a thorough training process before being hired by the Office and must be evaluated each year after being hired on. The current Sheriff is Norman Chaffins.

The city covers a total of 10.79 square miles of land and lies in the Clifty Area, the sandstone-dominated belt that is usually classified as part of the West Kentucky Coal Field. According to the latest census, the estimated population in 2023 is 6,432. The city government is a mayor-council, and the current mayor is Harold Miller.
