The London Police Department is responsible for reducing crime through prevention, detection, and apprehension of offenders; providing for the orderly and safe movement of vehicular traffic through traffic law enforcement, and conducting accident prevention measures and accident investigations, The mission of the department is to ensure public safety through regulation and control of hazardous conditions and provide the recovery and return of lost and stolen property. Today, the London Police Department is staffed by 38 police officers and civilian personnel. The London Police Department was one of the first police departments in the state of Kentucky to be certified as an Accredited Law Enforcement Agency. The current Chief of Police is Chuck Johnson.

London police officers transport individuals who have been arrested in the city to the Laurel County Jail, also located in London. The jail houses female and male inmates, who are county, state, or federally incarcerated. The county jail can house approximately 800 inmates. The jail offers inmates rehabilitation programs, to help integrate them back into society.
