The Nelson County Jail is a minimum security facility located in Frenchburg, Kentucky. The county jail houses both male and female offenders who have been arrested and charged with either misdemeanor or felony offenses. All inmates being held at the county jail are either serving their sentences, awaiting trial, cannot afford bond, or do not have a bond set. The mission of the County Jail is to maintain a professional environment as the employees protect the community by securely housing inmates placed in the care of the jail and to make every effort to impact their lives in a positive manner. The Nelson County Jail provides programs intended to reduce the occurrence of re-incarceration. The current jailer is Justin Hall.

How to Send Mail or Package

Inmates are allowed to receive mail from their friends and family while incarcerated. All incoming mail must be addressed with the Inmate name and Inmate ID and have a return address on the envelope. All incoming mail must be in the form of a letter or postcard. All mail is opened and inspected for contraband. If contraband is found, the mail will be destroyed.

Pictures are the only enclosures permitted to be mailed to inmates. Each inmate is allowed up to 10 photographs per package, which must be printed on photo paper. Printouts from the internet, colored pages, or provocative material are not permitted and will be destroyed.

Visitation Hours

The Nelson County Jail offers onsite and remote visitation to the inmates. Remote visitation is through the website called InmateSales. An account must be made before scheduling a visitation. There is a fee to use the InmateSales remote visitation option. Both onsite and remote visitation are available 7 days a week from 8:30am to 3:30pm and from 6pm to 9pm.

The Nelson County Jail offers a Jail Roster for the public to view all current inmates. The roster includes the mugshot of the inmate, the physical description of the inmate, the charges the inmate was arrested for, and their arrest date.

The office provides police protection and official paper service for the area of Nelson County. The office employs a Chief Deputy, a captain, and two sergeants. The investigations department consists of two highly trained detectives. Between the patrol and court security divisions, the office has 24 deputies. Nelson County is located in the north-central region of the state of Kentucky. The county was formed from land taken from Jefferson County, Kentucky in 1784, shortly after the Revolutionary War. The county was named for Thomas Nelson Jr., the governor of Virginia who signed the Declaration of Independence. The county covers a total of 424 square miles.
